SDL Trados Studio 2014 apps explained: customising user interface
In this section I will be explaining Apps for SDL Trados Studio 2014 categorised according to their functionality. The first article of the series presents an overview of the apps that can modify your user interface in the Studio.
Why the Apps?
For many reasons SDL Trados Studio is for me the ultimate CAT-tool. I could go on outlining its advantages for hours, but I’d like to concentrate on one feature which increases the functionality and attractiveness of SDL Trados Studio: its dedicated apps. Using SDL apps will let you add new functions to the standard software and work faster and more conveniently. Most of the apps are free and you can download them from the SDL App Store.
Let’s have a look then at the apps designed to customise your user interface.
Menu Maker for SDL Trados Studio 2014
Using this app will allow you to add more tools and applications to the Welcome menu situated on the left to have an easy access to your favourite or frequently used tools. After launching Menu Maker simply choose an item that you want add to the menu in the right window and place it to the second window. You can also rename the new menu item.
Your SDL Studio
Your SDL Studio personalises the “More Resources” tab in the home screen. You can add links to your favourite websites or useful documents for an easy and quick access. Remember to open the app as administrator (right click -> Run as administrator), as otherwise you will not be able to add new resources. After launching the app, you’ll see three windows as shown below.
The upper left window contains configuration files for the supported languages in the Studio. Choose one or more languages to customise the resources. In the section below you can change the order of menu items and add or delete new items. The right window is where you provide all the details of the new resource: its name, URL and a short description. The settings are saved automatically after closing the app. To see the changes in the “More Resources” tab, you will have to restart the Studio.
Bookmarks Plugin
This paid add-on with a free 30-day trial only partially belongs to this category. The app adds bookmarks to segments and automatically indicates the previously accessed segment or finds the segment that you have translated as the last one before closing your project. Bookmark Plugin adds 5 buttons to the Advanced menu in the user interface.
The next article of this series will present the apps related to translation memories.
